As part of the flood relief effort, Viviana, one of our promotoras and the president of the village of Yanamayo, has been actively collecting basic food supplies for her community over the last week, using our Ollantaytambo office as a base of operations.
We offered to help deliver the large bags of rice, sugar, and oats to this far-away mountain community, which is currently directly unreachable by road following the recent flooding. However, there is a back road to the village of T’astayoc, from where it is only a short two-hour walk across the mountain summit to Yanamayo!
Luckily, we were not the ones carrying this large load! Viviana’s incredible organizational skills had secured a pack of strong horses and men from the community to meet us at 8am! We helped double wrap foodstuffs in tough plastic to protect against the wind and rain before they were loaded onto the trusty steeds.
As Viviana continues to coordinate supplies for Yanamayo, we hope to support this community, and others affected, to ensure they receive necessary stocks of food, water and warmth in whatever way we can!
